Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, slammed the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) Wednesday. “My campaign, and the entire freedom movement, would not be as strong as they are today without a free Internet,” Mr. Paul said in a post on his Facebook page. Mr. Paul added that “that’s just one of the reasons why the establishment hopes to censor it with SOPA and PIPA.”

SOPA and the Protect Internet Privacy Act (PIPA) provoked a public outrage on the Internet Wednesday. Even Google and Facebook espoused a similar stance on SOPA and PIPA as concern over how the bills would impact the Internet overcame the normally competitive relationship.

“The Internet is the most powerful tool we have for creating a more open and connected world. We can’t let poorly thought out laws get in the way of the Internet’s development. Facebook opposes SOPA and PIPA, and we will continue to oppose any laws that will hurt the internet,” Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Wednesday. Google made its disgust clear with a censored image of its Google logo.
